Acer unveiled last week its all-new SpatialLabs technology, revolutionary software that effectively lifts content from the laptop’s screen to view and render in 3D, without the use of headphones.
The technology, capable of being integrated with the functionality of Unreal Engine, will change the way many designers design their projects on a computer, giving them the ability to interact with their 3D creations in real time. The software will dramatically change the design process for architects and designers, with SpatialLabs removing the limitations of a 2D screen by providing an extra dimension for designers to work at, right out of the box: an intuitive 360-degree perspective in which models can be rotated, moved or even dragged off the screen, allowing all angles to be viewed.
Buildings and their interiors, furniture and structural elements of moving parts and products will all be rendered and experienced in stereoscopic 3D, using the capabilities of SpatialLabs. SpatialLabs creates 3D visuals through the use of a combination of eye tracking solution, stereoscopic 3D display and real-time rendering technologies. SpatialLabs tracks a user with a stereo camera located on top of the device, which tracks the position and movement of a user’s head and eyes. This allows graphics processing technology to display a different image to each of the viewer’s eyes, creating a stereoscopic 3D effect that allows content to float in front of the screen. Real-time rendering technologies allow creators to interact with 3D models when using applications in the SpatialLabs Experience Center, review their creations in real time, improve design workflow, and present interactive and immersive 3D projects.
Acer’s COO Jerry Kao says the technology is an extension of ConceptD, a line of Acer-designed laptops created especially for designers.

SpatialLabs can be deactivated and activated according to user preferences. Accessible on Acer’s ConceptD laptops, the monitor is 2D by default, but can be switched to SpatialLabs features with the push of a button.
SpatialLabs is accessible through the SpatialLabs Experience Center, a launcher that includes a tutorial on how to use the technology, several shortcuts for applications, and installers for applications and add-ons. These applications include SpatialLabs Model Viewer, a tool that allows a user to import files from various programs in all major 3D file formats and present them in stereoscopic 3D, SpatialLabs Go: a proprietary solution for coast rendering alongside full-screen stereoscopic 3D content, PiStage for Maya, which gives the designer the ability to view and edit parts in 3D on a separate 2D monitor, and SpatialLabs Player, a native player for presenting videos side-by-side in stereoscopic 3D.
