Located in The Hamlet, an exclusive Oldham County section of Norton Commons, the home affectionately nicknamed “Lilly” is the result of a month-long project by Joe Kroll Builder.
“(It started) last December,” Kroll told the Courier Journal. “The owner had a lot of input into the design. It’s a unique home – there’s no other home in Norton Commons quite like it.”
First floor living room
As soon as you walk through the front door, Kroll explains, you notice that Lilly is different from most houses in the neighborhood. For starters, this house has a fireplace – and a large brick accent wall immediately to the right.
The great room features window seats on both sides of the fireplace and flows into the kitchen, which opens onto a porch with fireplace via large accordion sliding doors that essentially transform the rooms into one large space.
A walk-in pantry has been built along one side of the kitchen, cleverly disguised as cupboards while still providing ample space to store everything from food and drink to crockery and small appliances . The dining room can accommodate six people and opens onto another small porch.
“(One of the ground floor bedrooms) is for aging parents, when they come,” Kroll said, “but it can also be used as an office. It also has its own private bathroom. “

At the end of the hallway, a bright and bold powder room is ideally located to welcome guests. Just after is the parental suite; its large bathroom has a long double vanity as well as a spacious shower with multiple rain shower heads and connects to a walk-in closet with plenty of built-in drawers.
“(It has) kind of a clean look,” Kroll said of the suite, which features lots of neutral tones with gold accents. “They wanted everything (to be) simple.”
Towards the back of the house there is a spacious laundry room as well as a finished mudroom which includes ample storage space, rafter accents and a workstation.
RevWood, which combines the beauty of hardwood with the grain of laminate, is used throughout. “There’s no carpet in the whole house,” Kroll said.
Lower level entertainment
Downstairs, the finished basement features a bedroom, exercise room, bar and TV viewing areas.
“There’s (the) large main TV area,” Kroll explained, “and the subsidiary TV area with the full-height counter.”
To the right of the basement bar, a sliding door leads to a bourbon room. The space includes ample storage, a stone wall with Old Forester and WL Weller barrels, and six floating shelves.
“The light will shine through and (illuminate) the bottles,” Kroll said.

Lounging on the second floor
Additional bedrooms and bathrooms are on the second floor – and just up the stairs is another feature that Kroll says is a first at Norton Commons and his favorite part of the house. “It’s like a veranda loft,” he explained. “It’s kind of a new concept.”
Natural light from windows on both sides of the room illuminates the huge space, which features a window seat with storage below, a large sofa, a round table with chairs in one corner, a a massage chair in another and a wall-mounted TV with an entertainment center. Above, active skylights — another rare feature in the neighborhood — let in more sunlight and make the room feel even bigger than it already is.
“(The house also) technically has six bedrooms, which is pretty rare for (Norton Commons),” Kroll added. “And the style of the house on the outside is very unique. A lot of the houses here are really square (but this one) isn’t like that. It’s a craftsman style, but there are two large dormers in the outside. I think that just sets him (apart).”
