The dramatic redesign of Mill Town at Bousquet Ski Resort, an iconic Berkshires landmark, is the perfect example of how seasoned in-house designers are harnessing the latest CET design technology to deliver advanced interior furnishings and design solutions to meet specific requirements.
When Mill Town approached BBE Office Interiors, they had specific style, durability and sustainability goals for the interior and exterior spaces of the newly renovated ski resort to enhance skier and holidaymaker experiences. BBE has ensured that the items chosen are high-end, durable furniture, made to last. Materials with ecological characteristics, such as furniture made of natural wood, helped to align the interior environment with the exterior. To provide the durability needed to cope with the wear and tear of skiers traversing gaps with heavy equipment, all furniture was specified as commercial grade and included high pressure laminates that could last over 20 years.
Emily Gabriel, Design Director, Mill Town, shared an overview of the project: “It was so easy to work with BBE and made product selection and sourcing easy from start to finish. After providing them with my mood boards, we selected products from multiple vendors to give us a variety of good, better, and budget options that matched the design ideas I had in mind. The process was very collaborative and BBE remained flexible when we had changes or wanted to do something custom. We are so pleased with the result and the follow through along the way, from the little details to the big picture from the BBE team.
There are generally two space layout design approaches for customers in BBE’s markets, which include healthcare, education, hospitality and business – either manufacturer space planners, or designer-led projects. Company President Dan Proskin explains the value of BBE’s designer-led approach: “Being there is valuable. This gives us complete control from start to finish, which helps our designers speed up their renders and ensures planning accuracy as they can visualize the right scale for each space. Sometimes CAD drawings of specified products are not accurate or may change on the fly. Seeing exactly what the space looks like and taking action can avoid costly changes and delays. For Mill Town, all of their stands were custom designed and could not be returned, so we had to plan the space right the first time.
Manufacturing space planners typically don’t go onsite, making it difficult for them to take responsibility when furniture doesn’t fit. Customers also have no choice of product lines when dealing with the manufacturer as they only have one line to offer. BBE can make recommendations from hundreds of furniture lines. Multiple choices provide flexible and affordable options when customers are budget constrained.
Proskin added, “Manufacturers’ design departments have longer turnaround times — a simple change can take up to a week. Once there, we can turn the whole design process around in less than 3 days, especially now with new technology.
Innovative technology offers knowledge, speed and efficiency
Innovation supported by new technologies has changed the design of offices, space planning and furniture, as well as their approaches, effectively increasing overall productivity and improving the end result. Proskin suggests, “When you combine the material advantages of experienced in-house designers with state-of-the-art technology, it’s a win-win situation for customers.”
CET Designer is smart, highly visual and intuitive space planning technology that simplifies product specification in a variety of industries. Ken Needham, lead designer for BBE explains: “With this new technology, the renderings are so realistic that they come to life. We can “try on” the actual finishing touches – fabrics and laminates – to show the customer many choices and then deliver exactly what they expect. It also helps our team organize projects and streamlines the entire process from ordering to delivery.
BBE is looking for partners who share common points of view. “We are looking for projects that have an impact; we’ve seen that in everything Mill Town does, their investments matter because they care about revitalizing the community. BBE and Mill Town share a vision of working collaboratively to better the community and region by investing in valuable projects and building connections. As Chairman of the Board of UCP of Western MA, an agency that supports children and adults with disabilities, Dan is committed to helping others in need. Mill Town maintains a community spirit in all of its endeavours.
