Design tips for the kitchen

THE kitchen is probably one of the most important rooms in the house for obvious reasons. In terms of space, we want the kitchen to be tidy, clean and with greater freedom of movement. Here are some tips on how to design the kitchen.

If you ask a professional designer, they’ll tell you that the first thing to consider is the layout or floor plan, which may be the most important factor. The kitchen is meant to be a functional space. A well-designed kitchen will allow you to maximize your movement, minimize the need to stop and reach, and improve your ability to make full use of space. If you plan to design the kitchen yourself, you can use a design app to help you imagine what you have in mind.

The design of a kitchen should be centered on three key elements: the stove, the sink and the refrigerator. The space between these luminaires should not be too far from each other and allows easy accessibility.

The kitchen is often a high traffic area. Therefore, it is important to create enough space to allow for greater movement and clear of obstacles and possible dangers. An open fridge or oven door, for example, should not impede movement and if there are people helping, there should be enough space to move around without getting in the way.

Experts like to use the term, the “kitchen work triangle.” A typical kitchen centers around three important components – the stove, fridge and sink – although there could be more than one depending on your needs. A bad layout will make working in the kitchen very difficult. The idea is to design the kitchen in such a way that it is easy to move between these three elements when cooking.

During the design process, you should keep in mind the key kitchen tasks: preparing, serving and cleaning. Kitchen light fixtures should be close enough to each other, such as the space between the stove and the sink; and between the refrigerator and the stove. If they are positioned apart, it can lead to complications when performing tasks. They should be a comfortable distance from each other. It also helps reduce risks such as accidentally dropping something on the floor.

Gone are the days when kitchens were entirely utilitarian and intended for one use only: the kitchen. Modern kitchens are designed to be versatile. It should serve more than just a place to cook, but also be a space for entertainment and relaxation. With this in mind, kitchens today are designed to be open and inviting, such as the addition of seating, to allow people to relax and socialize without interfering with work in progress.

Sink first

In the design phase, it is strongly advised to place the sink first and design from there. Although the oven and fridge are also essentials (compared to the kitchen work triangle), the sink is traditionally where we’ll likely spend most of our time.

The furnace

When positioning the stove and/or oven, they must be placed on the outside wall. This will make it easier and cheaper to install a ventilation system to remove smoke and odors.

vertical storage

Rather than installing cabinets, maximize the use of the wall by giving it storage space in the form of shelves, cabinets, wall hooks and racks. The cabinet layout should be organized according to how you use the space. It is advisable to place commonly used items close together and within easy reach.

If stored properly, the wall helps add dimension to the aesthetic.

Kitchen island

Since the kitchen is one of the busiest areas in the house, there must be enough space to allow more freedom of movement and to ensure that nothing gets in the way.

For kitchens with larger spaces, a kitchen island can be added. This is a counter placed in the middle where food preparation is also done. When installing an island, make sure it will not create an obstruction in front of major appliances. Make sure the refrigerator or oven doors can swing freely and there is still room for people to pass through. At the same time, it should be within reach along with the rest of the fixtures.

Kitchen work can be tedious but if designed well, it can make tasks less cumbersome and more comfortable if the above factors are taken into consideration.
