Police took a man into custody after a major police intervention – including the armed delinquent squad and police negotiators – met in a standoff in a Massey neighborhood.
Armed police cordoned off a residence on Cedar Heights Ave after reporting the suspect may have a gun, according to Inspector Shawn Rutene of Tāmaki Makaurau Police.
Rutene confirmed that a number of surrounding properties had been evacuated.
A man is assisting police and will face charges related to an incident at a gas station.
According to initial reports, there had been an aggravated theft, but further investigations established that the offender was in a stolen vehicle.
The individual resisted arrest after police arrived and fled the scene.
Police have located a gun at the address and the gun has now been seized.
The response included an ambulance, a New Zealand fire and emergency vehicle and around 24 police officers, including around 16 members of the Armed Offenders Squad, according to a nearby witness.
A neighbor who asked not to be identified by name told the Herald that she could hear police repeatedly shouting in a nearby house for someone in an upstairs room “to put the gun down rooftop fire “.
About five people left the surrounded house. But the last time she saw, before being evacuated with her two young children, the stalemate continued, she said.
“I heard these neighbors outside this morning having a little scuffle in the communal alley,” she said, explaining that around six police officers arrived later wearing gloves and masks.
“And then they started to come in with guns.”
Initially, the woman said, she put her children in a room with a very loud DVD in the hope that they wouldn’t hear anything from outside.
Police later told the family to leave the house with the door open – getting them out so quickly that they couldn’t get car seats for the children.
But she’s lucky, she said, she has family in her lockdown bubble nearby – outside of the cordoned off area.
“Most of the other neighbors are just hanging out on the streets with their children,” she said.
Police were seen inspecting a Toyota Hilux which had previously been reported stolen.
Police ensured evacuees remained in their bubbles, wear face masks and have hand sanitizer.
