- Metricon was by far the largest home builder
- Harry Triguboff’s Meriton apartments had 2,893 housing starts
- BGC was in tenth place, the largest of the WA home builders
Metricon has been named Australia’s No. 1 homebuilder for the seventh consecutive year, according to the Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) Colorbond Steel Housing Top 100 report.
The report, which ranks the top 100 homebuilders in Australia based on builds started, was released today at the Construction Outlook Breakfast in Melbourne.
Metricon recorded 5,969 housing starts in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Last year it saw 6,052 new builds.
The news comes as Metricon is said to have faced numerous financial difficulties this year, like all companies in the sector. Metricon founder and CEO Mario Blasin also died suddenly in May as well.
Metricon CEO Peter Langfelder said he was proud of Metricon’s ability to navigate through difficult times.
“Escalating construction costs, declining consumer confidence, consecutive central bank interest rate hikes, rising inflation and speculation around industry stability have all conspired against us and our competitors,” he said.
“Despite this, we have managed to deliver 5,969 new Metricon homes to Australian customers over the past year. This is a very tangible proof point of our continued commercial strength.
“We are very proud to be ranked number one for the seventh consecutive year and to have increased Metricon’s share of the national homebuilding market during this challenging time for the construction industry. It’s a demonstration of the dedication of our team, our passion for what we do, and most importantly the Australian families we do it for.
Peter Langfelder, CEO of Metricon
“Much of the credit for our success must go to our people, trades and suppliers whose deep knowledge, expertise and hard work have enabled us to deliver homes that match the unique lifestyles and needs of our clients.
“Metricon’s top priority over the next 12 months is to continue to execute quality builds as quickly and efficiently as possible while maintaining balance in the pipeline.
“We have said before that our business has a proven history of success and remains strong and viable, with the full support of our key stakeholders – that remains the case today.”

BGC remains WA’s largest builder
Despite a sharp decline in new construction starts, from 4,205 last year to 1,980 this year, BGC ranked tenth, down from sixth, nationally. This makes BGC the largest homebuilder in WA, with ABN Group recording 1,697 new builds in the state during the year.
Michael Bartier, executive managing director of BGC Housing Group, said the decline in new construction reflected the responsible approach the company has taken to managing the stimulus grant works pipeline in 2020 and 2021.
“Although the results are satisfactory for us, it is not a question of numbers but of doing the right thing for our customers,” Mr. Bartier said.
“We are solely focused on delivering quality new homes to our customers and managing the challenges the industry is currently facing with material and labor constraints and we have a number of strategies in play. to achieve this.
